Quick Easy Raw Tamarind Soup/Stew (Pacchi Pulusu)

This is a kind of chaaru very famous in Andhra Pradesh. Its usually served with some rice and lentils on the side or cooked together. Its a quick easy way to spice up the mild dal and rice combination. There are many variations of chaaru.. this is the easiest version that requires almost no cooking.

Ingredients:
------------
Tamarind (size of a lemon)

4 Green Chillies (burnt over fire and crushed)
Onions chopped finely
Cilantro chopped finely
Chilli powder as per taste
salt as per taste

Tempering:
-----------
1 tsp Mustard seeds
1 tsp Cumin seeds
1/2 tsp Turmeric

Process:
--------
Soak the Tamarind, and squeeze as much juice from it as possible. Add water with caution, it will change the "tangy" flavor.. More water less flavor. So adjust as per your liking. Put the chopped onion in a bowl and sprinkle the salt over it and mix them up (using your hand may be best, you want to use some force (very little) cause some onion juice to come out and mix salt). Add these to the tamarind juice.
Burn the green chillies over fire and crush them (Mortar & Pestle :)). Add it to the tamarind juice. Now add chilli powder as may be required and salt if you need more.
In a small pan, add 1 Tbsp oil, when its hot add turmeric, mustard seeds, cumin seeds and let them splutter. Add some curry leaves. When its done add it to the tamarind stew. Stir and then garnish with chopped cilantro.

Enjoy with Khichdi or plain rice & any type of dal.
